~ Statehood: January 26, 1837 ~
Making Me the 26 th state. My nickname: "Wolverine State" also "Great Lakes State."

Origin of my name: Is Native American and based on a Chippewa word "Michigami" meaning "Great Water" and refers to the Great Lakes.

My Five largest cities are:

Detroit,
Warren
Grand Rapids,
Flint,
Lansing (is my Capital).

Yes, I have a small town called,
"Hell", Michigan.

I am the home of one of the longest suspension bridges (Mackinac) in North America. It is more than 100 feet longer than the Golden Gate Bridge. From my lower northern shoreline, it reaches 5 miles over the narrowest part of the lake to my upper southern shoreline. The Mackinac Bridge (also called the "Mighty Mac" by the Michigan residents). Mighty Mac was opened for use in 1957 and has drawn many travelers, nationwide, who come to see it and to cross over it. In 2007, Mackinac Bridge celebrate it's 50th anniversary...

On the west side of the bridge you see Lake Michigan and to the east you can see Lake Huron. For a few decades now, on Labor Day, the 5 mile long bridge walk is held with my Governor leading the walk-a-cross. Many people come to join in on the walk-a-cross. Below is a link to image galleries, you will find some beautiful photos of the Mackinac Bridge in the Bridge Gallery.

My main Native American Tribes & Bands are:

Chippewa (Ojibwe, Ojibwa, Ojibway)
Potawatomi (Keeper of the Fire),
Ottawa (Odawa)

Together, they were known as the
"The Three Fires."

They have Pow Wows through out the year. Including ones held at my major Universities.

"I am wonderful, I am beautiful"

I have many lakes, rivers, ponds,
and many creeks and streams.
You're never farther than 11 miles
from water.

I have roaming hills, Valleys, farm lands, forest,
Many Fruit and Apple orchards, dams, meadows and swamps...

In my upper part, I have mountains,
and many waterfalls.
Tahquamenon Falls, being the second largest waterfall east of
the Mississippi River.
I have many interesting sights to see and places go.

I am wonderful, I am beautiful.
Come... visit me, I have a lot to offer.
